John McGeachie Henderson Hotchkis
John Hotchkis (Service No 383) was born in Greta, NSW in 1890.
At enlistment John was single, 25 years old, worked as an electricians assistant and lived in Clifton, N.S.W. He nominated his father, Daniel, also of Clifton, as his next of kin.
John embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A38 Ulysses with Mining Corps 1, Company 1 on 20th February 1916. He arrived in France on 5th May 1916 and joined the Australian Electrical and Mechanical Unit on 30th September 1916.
John saw service on the Western Front and was not wounded, however he had health problems and was returned to Australia in July 1917. He was discharged medically unfit, with a pension, on 31st October 1917.
In 1919 he married Jane Melrose and they raised 5 children.
John died in Austinmer, NSW in 1963.
His brother James Hilton Hotchkis (Service No 564) also served.
