Joseph Thomas Meley (Service No 1838) was born in Shellharbour, N.S.W., in 1881.

At enlistment in Brisbane, Queensland, Joseph was 35 years old, married and worked as a motorman. His enlistment papers state he served in the Boer War.

Joseph married Valburg Nielsen, in Queensland, on 8th January 1913.

He embarked on RMS Mongolia, with the 11th Light Horse Regiment, 10th Reinforcement, on 8th July 1916. He arrived in Egypt and saw service in the Middle East. Joseph had a number of hospital admissions for illness but no wounding on file. He was returned to Australia in April 1919 and discharged medically unfit on 13th July 1919.

Joseph died in Brisbane, Queensland, in 1960.
