Herbert William Hansen (Service No 6558) was born in Corrimal, N.S.W., in 1894.

He attended Sydney University, and at enlistment he was single, 22 years old, worked as a school teacher and had served 4 years with the Cadets.

Herbert embarked on HMAT 18 Wiltshire, with 18th Battalion, 19th Reinforcement, on 7th February 1917 after serving as an instructor, in Australia. He arrived in England on 11th April 1917, and was promoted to Sergeant. 

Herbert joined the 18th Battalion in Belgium, on 28th August 1917, taking part in the Third Battle of Ypres. He was returned to Australia in May 1919, and discharged on 12th August 1919.

On 15th April 1922, Herbert married Gwendoline Nielson, and they had 1 child.

Herbert died on 5 July 1928, in Springwood, N.S.W. 

Herbert's brother, Harold, also served.
