William Clifton Fitzpatrick
William Fitzpatrick (Service No 9579) was born in Katoomba, N.S.W. around 1896.
At enlistment William was single, 19 years old, worked as a baker and lived in Wollongong; he had served 4 years with the Cadets.
He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A70 Ballarat with Australian Army Service Corps 3rd Reinforcement 16th February 1916. William arrived in Egypt and was posted to 5th Field Bakery on 16th April 1916.
He was sent to France soon after but was admitted to hospital in England suffering from tonsillitis on 4th July 1916. He returned to his unit on 19th October 1916 and saw service on the Western Front.
On 22nd September 1918 William was promoted to Lance Corporal. William's health was poor and he was admitted to hospital in England a number of times.
William married Hilda Fletcher in England on 22nd March 1919 and she returned to Australia with him in July 1919.
He was discharged from the AIF on 1st November 1919. William and Hilda returned to Wollongong where William worked as a baker. The couple had 2 children.
William died in Wollongong in 1966.
