Edward Leathes
Edward Leathes (Service No 5193) was born in Blackheath, England. On 3rd August, 1895 Edward joined the Merchant Navy and when he arrived in Brisbane in 1898 he decided to stay. At the time of enlistment Edward was a single 35 year old platelayer from Corrimal. His enlistment papers state that he served 5 years with the South African Constabulary.
Edward embarked on HMAT A70 Ballarat with 9th Reinforcements, Divisional Ammunition, Column 1 on 9th September, 1915. He arrived in Egypt on 6th November 1915 and served in Egypt until transferred to France on 21st July, 1916.
Edward saw service on the Western Front until 9th October, 1917 when he was wounded in action. He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a severe gun shot wound to his left thigh.
Edward was returned to Australia in March, 1918 and discharged medically unfit on 22nd July, 1918.
In 1918 Edward married Mary Holland in Sydney.
