Norman Hugh Fallow

Norman Fallow (Service No 1014) was born in Riverton, New Zealand and served for 2 years 6 months in the New Zealand Mounted Rifles before coming to Australia.

When Norman enlisted he was 20 years of age, single, and working as a bank clerk.  Norman had served 3 months with 37th Infantry.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A65 Clan McEwan with 6th Reinforcements, 1st Light Horse on 28th June 1915.  He arrived on Gallipoli on 25th October 1915 and remained there till the evacuation.  He was sent back to action soon after, proceeding to join the Western Frontier Force on 14th January 1916.

Norman saw service in the Middle East until he was wounded in action at Romani on 9th August 1916, when he was evacuated to hospital in Egypt for treatment of a gun shot wound to his right arm.

He was returned to Australia in September 1916 and discharged.

Norman re-enlisted on 21st November 1917 and embarked from Sydney on HMAT A38 Ulysses with 1st Light Horse Regiment on 19th December 1917.  He arrived back in Egypt on 16th January 1918 and rejoined the 1st Light Horse in the field on 20th April 1918.

Not long after, Norman was admitted to hospital on 16th July 1918 for treatment of periostitis (shin splints) to his left leg and returned to his unit on 10th September 1918.   He was back in hospital on 21st October 1918 with severe malaria. By the time he returned to his unit in December the war had officially ended.

Norman returned to Australia in March 1919 and discharged medically unfit on 28th May 1919.

In 1932 he married Joyce Whittingham and they raised 2 children.

Norman is commemorated on the Wollongong Memorial (N.S.W.).
