Charles Wardle Pigg
Charles Pigg (Serivce No 2838) was born in Durham, England around 1877, and was baptised on 14th April 1877. Charles came to Australia in July 1912.
When Charles enlisted he was 38 years old, single, and worked as a coalminer at Corrimal, N.S.W. Charles nominated his brother Joseph, of Kembla Heights, N.S.W. as his next of kin
He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A14 Euripides with 6th Reinforcements, 17th Battalion on 2nd November 1915. After Charles arrived in Egypt he was transferred to 5th Pioneer Battalion on 3rd March 1916.
He arrived in France on 25th June 1916 and served on the Western Front until he was wounded on 14th September 1917. Charles was evacuated to the 1st Australian Field Ambulance for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his skull, right arm and right leg. However his wounds were severe and he died that day.
Charles is buried in The Huts Cemetery, Dickebusch, Belgion: Plot V, Row C, Grave 15.
Charles brother John Pigg (Service No 4270) was also killed in action in this war.
